With over 25 years of senior leadership experience within Higher Education, Andrea draws upon her professional background in human resources management and organisational development where she held roles in both the private and public sectors to deliver large-scale cultural and structural change programmes.

Andrea holds postgraduate qualifications in Human Resource Management and Employment Law with the universities of Northumbria and Surrey and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

As Chief Operating Officer at the University of Sunderland, Andrea provides Executive oversight of the University’s professional support services, including Student Journey, External Relations, Human Resources, and Academic Registry and Governance.

As statutory clerk to the Board of Governors, she provides Board members with the advice, support and information necessary for them to fulfil their responsibilities. She ensures the University and its subsidiary companies operate within the higher education sector’s complex legal, regulatory and statutory framework.

This fast-paced session will bring together three executives who have taken artificial intelligence from concept to reality. From assessment and curriculum redesign to student services and internal operations, these case studies will show how universities are embedding AI tools to support sustainable transformation.

Each speaker will have 5-6 minutes to share what problem they were trying to solve; what AI solution or tool they used; what worked, what did not – and what is next. This will be followed by a short discussion to identify themes, risks, and lessons for others who are getting started.

Professor Helena Gillespie is Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Inclusion at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. She leads projects on a range of EDI topics, such as access and participation in higher education, the inclusive curriculum and student mental health. Helena has recently completed research projects focussed on interventions to improve student engagement and wellbeing which were funded by the Cabinet Office. Helena is also a Lead Quality Assessor for the Office for Students.

At a time of growing mistrust in higher education – fuelled by rising fees, loan burdens, industrial action, and the cost of living – universities must work harder than ever to demonstrate transparency, deliver on their commitments, and co-create meaningful experiences with students. For students – whether online or on-campus – experience remains at the heart of why education matters.

This interactive session puts belonging, voice, and value at the centre of the conversation. We will open with short provocations from sector leaders and a current student, before opening up to the room. Around their tables, attendees will discuss how to deliver a meaningful experience – not just for students, but with them. This is a chance to talk candidly, connect across institutions, and bring energy and authenticity back in the room.
